Mark Neerincx is Full Professor of Human-Centered Computing at Delft University of Technology and Principal Scientist for Perceptual & Cognitive Systems at TNO (Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research). His research focuses on the socio-cognitive engineering of artificial agents, or "ePartners", that exhibit social, cognitive, and affective behaviours to support human performance, resilience, health, and wellbeing.
A recurring theme in Mark's work addresses how agents can represent, learn, and reason about human values, and how this shapes decision-making and trust in human-AI teams. This includes long-term dialogue agents that build value-centric memory in collaboration with the user, frameworks for allocating moral decisions between humans and agents in ways that preserve meaningful human control, and studies on how interdependence between team members shapes trust calibration in human-machine teaming. Applied in domains such as firefighting and other high-stakes team settings, this work asks not only how AI systems perform, but how they help humans understand, negotiate, and act on values as circumstances evolve.
